China Extends Countervailing Duties on US-Origin n-Propanol for Five Years

China will continue to impose countervailing duties on imports of n-propanol originating in the United States for five years from November 6, 2026. The Ministry of Commerce announced the decision on November 5 in Announcement No. 55 of 2026, following an expiry review of the existing measures.

The decision extends an existing duty rather than introducing a new measure. For buyers using US-origin n-propanol, the duty remains a factor in import cost calculations and sourcing decisions throughout the renewed period.

Implications for downstream buyers

n-Propanol is used as a solvent in coatings, paints and adhesives. Coatings companies that source the material from the United States may need to account for the continuing duty when comparing supply options and planning procurement.

The effect on an individual company's costs and supply chain will depend on its sourcing arrangements and available alternatives. The continuation of the measure alone does not establish how prices or purchasing patterns will change.
